Save the Whales Assemblies
Snakes-N-Scales Saves the Whales and “goes off the deep end” to offer a program that has no live animals in it! No real whales, of course, but a great interesting combination of real and artificial hand specimens, illustrative posters and photos, and a few short video clips. These Whales Assemblies offer much more than just a few pictures or a sleepy slide show!

The program begins by introducing types of whales and what they look like, using photos and video. There are 2 basic types, the toothed whales like the Sperm Whale and the Dolphins and the Baleen Whales, like the Humpback above.
A truly “white whale” the Beluga. Though actually more closely related to a dolphin, you can see from the skull we bring, (a perfect replica) that these whales’ heads are full of teeth.

This is a Right Whale, which got its name from being the “right” whale to kill for the whalers. These whales are baleen whales. The bottom 2 photos show an actual section of baleen, which is like hair, used to filter the whales food. The food could be small fish, squid or more often mouth fulls of hundreds of shrimp.

Why the whales are in trouble is discussed with the class; from the hundreds of years of whaling to the modern problems of pollution and climate change.
Whale oil was the reason whaling occurred. This oil could be used for candles, lamps, machinery oils and even soaps. Until the invention of kerosene and actual laws preventing whale oil from being used in machinery, including cars, whales were destroyed by the thousands all over the globe. This oil is Sperm Whale oil and below is a Sperm Whale.

These are plastic replica tools used to cut up and process the whales’ body. (They look sharp, but they dull plastic toys.)
Whale teeth and bones were used in artwork. Known as “scrimshaw” these teeth are remarkable fakes!
Of all the whales, probably the best known and most beloved, is the Bottlenosed Dolphin. “Flipperina,” is a fiberglass model of a baby, though the way the children respond to it you would think it was real!–She is used to talk about parental care and the relationships these amazingly bright animals create with one another and with us.
Whales are mammals, and are much like us, they care for their young ones, defending them from predators, people and bad weather. The class is introduced to “Flipperina,” a replica, though very real looking, baby Bottlenosed Dolphin. The combination of this multi-media approach make our Whales Assemblies both unique and extremely memorable!
All whales tail flukes are uniquely patterned on their undersides, making each one recognizable like a fingerprint.
For preschool through 3rd grade the finale of the program is to fit as many children as possible into an outline of a Blue Whale’s tail, laid out on the floor. Pictures are encouraged, for the classes’ keepsakes.
